Musk emphasized, as he has previously, that the Starlink business needs to be “in a smooth sailing situation” with “good predictability” before it goes public.

“I’m not sure exactly when that [IPO] is, but maybe it will be like — I don’t know, just guessing — three or four years from now,” Musk said at an all-hands meeting of the private company’s employees on Thursday

Musk emphasized, as he has previously, that the Starlink business needs to be “in a smooth sailing situation” with “good predictability.”

At that point, “I think spinning it off as a public company can make a lot of sense,” the SpaceX CEO said.

Musk previously targeted an offering as soon as this year, according to an email to SpaceX employees obtained by CNBC. The email, sent by Musk in May 2019, said “it will probably make sense to take Starlink public in about three years or so.”

머스크는 앞서 CNBC가 입수한 스페이스X 직원들에게 보낸 이메일에 따르면 이르면 올해 안에 오퍼링을 목표로 삼았다. 머스크가 2019년 5월 보낸 이메일에는 "약 3년 후쯤 스타링크를 공개하는 것이 아마 말이 될 것"이라고 적혀 있었다.

 

Musk then pushed back that estimate, saying in a tweet last year that it would be “at least a few years before Starlink revenue is reasonably predictable,” adding that “going public sooner than that would be very painful.”

머스크는 이어 지난해 트위터를 통해 "스타링크 수익이 합리적으로 예측되기까지는 적어도 몇 년은 걸릴 것"이라며 "그보다 더 빨리 상장하는 것은 매우 고통스러울 것"이라고 밝히며 이 같은 추정을 뒤로 미뤘다.

 

Musk warned employees during his comments on Thursday that they “should not think of things going public as, like, a sure path to riches.”

머스크는 17일(현지시간) 직원들에게 "공개를 부를 향한 확실한 길처럼 생각하지 말라"고 경고했다.

 

“The public markets are fickle” and “really pistol-whip you if you don’t meet expectations,” he said.

그는 ”공개 시장은 변덕스럽다”며 ”기대에 미치지 못하면 정말로 총을 쏘는 것”이라고 말했다.

 

Musk has had an often contentious relationship with the regulations of publicly traded companies. In 2018, he agreed to pay millions in settlement charges with the Securities and Exchange Commission in response to fraud charges around an aborted plan to take his electric vehicle maker Tesla private.
